The first in what I hope will be an amazing series of things that actually happened in the Doctor Who eighth Doctor adventures books! This is a thing that happens in Unnatural History by Jonathan Blum and Kate Orman and you should totally go read it.

Apologies, you are getting the “I’ve had 1.5 hours of sleep” version of this meme (and yes there has been Fitz/Yates, though not in a fic, in an RP, moooost of which is catalogued here though I wouldn’t bother reading anything before April or so because I was fairly shit at writing Yates for the first few months…and whether or not any of the rest of it would be interesting or not is another matter entirely)

Why I like them: Fiiiiiitz I like him for EVERY REASON. I love his angst (PARTICULARLY the clone angst, though the self-doubt and tragic backstory variations are also incredibly fun). I love his snappy one-liners. I love his penchant for getting himself into the worst situations imaginable. I love his love for the Doctor. I love how he’s always getting himself into even more trouble than he was already in before. I love that he has moments of camp that are portrayed as endearing. I love that he is a male character who the writers allow to cry quite frequently without in any way suggesting that it makes him weak.

Favorite line: That would be fairly impossible to decide. This isn’t strictly speaking a line, but I love the bit at the end of Earthworld that goes: “Giving things up for the Doctor felt good. He – well, the real Fitz, anyway, but it felt like it had happened to him – had gone with his mum to see a play of Oscar Wilde’s. Am dram – support the local community and they might begin to like us. There was a lot of keeping secrets for the good of others in that, and the young Fitz had been rather dissatisfied with the ending, because all the secrets were kept and the characters went on, he assumed, to live happily ever after. He’d wanted to see the big dramatic scenes where all the secrets were discovered, and his mum had said he was missing the point. Now, the mature Fitz could see the point: could understand that Oscar Wilde had had the right idea all along. If keeping a secret could make someone else happy, then hey, secrets were a good thing. There might be some weird sense of closure if everything came out in the open, some soap-opera resolution, but happy endings were infinitely preferable. The Doctor had looked after Fitz – had thought he was looking after Fitz – for years now. Fitz might not be the real Fitz any more, but that was irrelevant. He had a purpose in life now. He was going to look after the Doctor. Whatever it took.”

Favorite outfit: Three words: purple crushed velvet. Though any time he gets dressed up it amuses me unduly. His discomfort in Victorian clothes near the beginning of Camera Obscura made me laugh.

OTP: Fitz/Doctor. See past post about Eight. I ship these two to the point of distraction. I ship them more than canon or sense dictates.

A wish: That Henrietta Street had been less shit and that we could have known a little bit of Fitz’s perspective (particularly the whole, you know, the scene with the heart) and heard him trying to wisecrack and just generally had actual FITZ in that book (along with Anji and the Doctor for that matter) rather than the pile of unmitigated rubbish that it was. Other than that …. not that I can think of? MORE FANFIC. NOT OBVERSE.

An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: There are too many of these to count. Mainly Fitz leaving the TARDIS. :C

I’m going to be ambitious and answer for audio!Eight, book!Eight, and comic!Eight

Audio!Eight

Why I like them: Unf Paul McGann’s voice. Big Finish’s audios have such great overarching storylines (everything from Storm Warning leading up to Zagreus, all of the Divergent Universe culminating in The Next Life, everything in the NEAs leading up to To The Death grinding my heart into powder).

Favorite outfit: Irrelevant for audio. My favourite variations include mean!Eight and tortured!Eight. I’m just a bad person if you guys didn’t realize it by now.

OTP: I ship him with everyone, is this a surprise. Well, no, not EVERYONE. But quite a few of them. I’m gaining a new appreciation for Eight/Lucie as I relisten to the NEAs. However, I’m not huge on the shipping for audio!Eight - not like Book!Eight.

A wish: I can’t wait for the audios set after To The Death and I hope they are every bit as heart-breaking as I imagine they must be. ALSO I WISH THERE WERE MORE FITZ AUDIOS yes.

An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: Big Finish can do little wrong in my eyes. There’s nothing worse for him to go through, is there?

Book!Eight

Why I like them: Because if it were possible I would eat sadness by the spoonful. That is my philosophy on life. Also he loves backrubs and gets amnesia and has Gallifrey angst and kisses everything that moves and has a room full of butterflies. In so many of the books I have read he is just written SO WELL, with so much depth and complexity and sadness and mystery.

Favorite outfit: My mind is drawing a blank right now. Does his “I’m-going-to-give-myself-an-angsty-haircut-in-the-wilderness-and-live-with-tigers” look count as an outfit?

OTP: ~~Must you ask?~~ Fitz, obviously. Doctor/his various one-book boyfriends can be cute, in a temporary way (Doctor/Karl, Doctor/Turing, etc.) but in the long-run, it’s Fitz. Cue the sappy playlist.

A wish: I wish there were more good fanfic with book!Eight. Oh hey I should finish some sometime, shouldn’t I?

An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: Again, and even moreso than audio!Eight, what worse could possibly happen to him? I guess Fitz dying UGH just typing that is hard. NEVER.

My nickname for them: I don’t really nickname characters.

Comic!Eight (Disclaimer - I’m thinking the comics with Izzy, I haven’t read the others)

Why I like them: Interesting how there are variations between the three. Comic!Eight is traveling with someone younger (though is she that much younger than Charley and Lucie? she seems it somehow) to whom he is a friend/father figure. Compared with book!Eight and audio!Eight, nothing truly awful happens to him. Though he has that one story where he is quite mean to Destrii and Fey, in *general* he is less violent/short-tempered than his other versions. He and Izzy have great banter. He is patient and fun and fatherly with her, and it’s wonderful. Also he is a vampire that one time.

Favorite outfit: His outfit.

OTP: I don’t really ship comic!Eight with anyone. Remember that one time Izzy thought he and Grace were boyfriend and girlfriend?

A wish: Don’t really have one. :x

An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: Bad things? :c Like I said, he’s been through so much less than book!Eight or audio!Eight, so he has … further to fall, if awful things were to happen.
