Anon: So I guess Ten’s your favourite Doctor? Who’s your favourite companion? ^^
Shockingly, Ten’s only my second favourite. Eight is my favourite Doctor. (With Five and Six being runner ups after those two.) But Tennant is my favourite actor to have played the Doctor. (Though Paul McGann was very happy when I told him Eight was my favourite.)
Donna’s my favourite New companion, and Nyssa is my favourite Classic companion, though those are if just counting TV eps.
Charley Pollard is my absolute favourite companion, even though she’s only in the audio dramas.
And I’m now going to provide reasons, because I have a lot of new followers, and you need to be introduced to the wonder.
Charlotte Pollard is an 18 year-old Edwardian adventuress, who ran away from her upper-class life, sneaking aboard an airship dressed as a male crew-member, and became a paradox once the Doctor saved her life. Brave, kind, passionate, witty, intelligent, impulsive, stubborn, exuberant, all around lovely, and unfailingly loyal. One of the few the Doctor has ever openly loved as more than a friend, and quite deservedly so. She fills me with joy.
She travels with Eight and later with Six (it’s complicated), and also gets to meet Four, Five and Seven. She also gets to kick Rassilon’s ass, and meet Davros, and hang with Romana, and fight the Cybermen and Daleks, and pretend to be a Time Lady, and I’m just saying, she’s awesome. And it’s nice to have a companion who doesn’t look like a model, but is still gorgeous in her own way. She’s also eventually getting her own spin-off series, and I WANT IT TO BE HERE NOOOW.
Look at these cuties.
(PS: Thanks to Koni for doing most of this art.)
And now for quotes.
Charley: I hope you know what you’re doing, Doctor. I suppose it’s a vain hope.
Doctor: Let’s have a look around.
Charley: Are you sure it’s safe?
Doctor: Of course not.
Charley: I’m so pleased(!)
Pietro: A hundred years of waiting. I can’t imagine it.
Doctor: It isn’t that long.
Charley: Oh, here we go. The mysterious Doctor holds forth again about the nature of time. Get punting, Doctor.
Charley’s mother: Have you been letting Gypsies stay in the attic again?
Charley: I’m a giant robotic mouse talking to a giant robotic gazelle. I’m fine.
Charley: Did they have orgies?
Doctor: Charlotte Pollard!
Charley: I went to an orgy once. …I didn’t stay.
She also gets to travel with their chameleon-skinned friend C’rizz.
Davros: Welcome to my world. I am its emperor.
Doctor: How marvellous for you! C’rizz, say hello to the not very nice emperor.
C’rizz: Uhh, it’s a pleasure to meet you! …Is that the right expression, Charlotte?
Charley: Yes, but… I think that we’re actually supposed to be screaming. Or perhaps proclaiming “DALEKS ALL ALONG! WE SHOULD HAVE REALISED!”
Doctor: Charley, you stole my line.
C’rizz: Do you want to ask?
Charley: No, you. I did it last time.
C’rizz: You sure?
Charley: When the Tressillian flagship disappeared into that spatial fracture. You know, the day before yesterday.
C’rizz: All right then. Doctor, what’s happening?
C’rizz: I said “what’s happening?”
Charley: No, not like that. Ahem. “Doctor, what’s happening, Doctor?!!”
C’rizz: Oh, that’s good!
Charley: Practice, you see.
And now shipping…
Charley: I know it’s an awful, terrible thing, but… I want you to do it. Oh, Doctor, please do it! Before it’s too late!
Eight: Charley, I can’t, you’re my friend, and I love you. I can’t look you in the eye and shoot you, no matter what!
Charley: Doctor, I love you too! And this is no way to say goodbye, but… please… please.. oh, what’s wrong with you! You’ve saved the universe before, so do it again, the only way how!
Doctor: Where is she now? Where’s Charley?
TARDIS: Is that all you care about? Your woman.
Doctor: My friend.
TARDIS: Oh, friend is it? And what is your idea of friendship, Doctor? I’d really like to know.
Doctor: Friendship is… is… it’s caring for somebody more than you do for yourself.
TARDIS: Fool! That’s not friendship, that’s love. Blind, heedless love.
(And hey PS the audios did humanoid!TARDIS first.)
Doctor: I didn’t expect to care for you as much as I did. That was my mistake. When it came to it, with the Web of Time hanging in the balance, having to make a choice between you and the universe, I’d say hang the Web of Time. You’re more important. Let the universe rot. Charley, you’re worth more than all that. I sacrificed myself for you, to save your life. And I did it gladly. I thought I’d never see you again, but it wouldn’t matter, so long as I knew you were safe.
Charley: I don’t understand. You’re saying you did care for me after all? That you— loved me…
Doctor: OF COURSE I loved you! I killed myself for you, didn’t I?! Of course I loved you! …Of course I love you.
(and then stuff and they kiss)
Doctor: I don’t want to be without you, Charley.
Charley: You won’t be.
Doctor: I need you. I can’t be on my own again.
Charley: You won’t be alone, I promise you.
Doctor: Yes… The Doctor and Charley, as it always was. Thank you, Charley. Thank you for saving me.
Charley: I promise. I need you too.
Doctor: You will always be a part of me now. Inside. And I will always be a part of you.
Charley: I know. I’m glad.
Doctor: We’re trapped here, on this one planet, without the TARDIS. Lost in a new universe. We can’t know what it’s like.
Charley: I’m ready to find out if you are.
Charley: Come on, take my hand.
Doctor: But we can see now, we don’t need to hold onto each other.
Charley: I know. Take my hand anyway.
I can’t wait for the 50th anniversary audio (trailer), because it has Four & Leela, Five & Nyssa, Six & Peri, Seven & Ace, and Eight & Charley, with bonus Master. And just MORE CHARLEY SOON YAY! And Eight and Charley get their reunion, FINALLY, after 6 years and all that heartbreak.
