Diazomethane - If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

~~I would want to learn French for the fucking language exam in January ugh fml~~. Does ‘anything’ mean ‘things which humans are actually capable of learning without magic’? Because, like, learning to waterbend would be pretty rad. Barring that, I suppose it’d be nice to know how to fix computers, or do code of various kinds.

Sarin - What annoys you the most?

So many things in the world annoy me that it’s hard to pick a champion. At the moment the fact that I’m still doing coursework is pretty annoying to me. Just one more semester of this nonsense. I can’t wait until I’m done and can just be researching and teaching.

Nitromethane - what are your phobias?

I don’t have any phobias TECHNICALLY because I’m not overwhelmingly, dysfunctionally afraid of anything. That being said, I’m pretty sure the meme just means “what are you afraid of” in which case:

1. Heights - To the degree where I sometimes act a bit silly in tall buildings with windows, on bridges, at the tops of staircases, etc. Hilariously, heights are one of the few things in the universe that my scaredy-cat of a girlfriend ISN’T afraid of, so she can mock me with impunity for being ridiculous about them. It also means that scenes like the one from Mission Impossible 4 (on the outside of the skyscraper) are more horrifying to me than like, the content of any horror movie ever.

2. Whales - It’s a long story. Well, not really. Who wouldn’t be afraid of giant monsters lurking out of sight beneath the surface of the dark water, that could crush or swallow (yes I do know they don’t really do that) a boat/person? Basically this image is a pretty accurate representation of several nightmares of mine.

3. Paralysis - Not physical, really, though that’s an element of it. It’s like being afraid of being so afraid of something that I cannot remove myself from whatever situation is causing the fear in the first place. Usually appears alongside one of the first two. It’s very meta as fears go.

Oh no, I am supposed to be doing homework, what will I do. Not gonna pass it on, though, because I’m a rebel and I make up my own rules.

1. I love all things audio. I pretty much constantly listen to music or audiobooks. I do most of my ‘reading’ for grad school by audiobook and when those aren’t available, if possible I use PDFs, an OCR program, and my laptop’s automatic robot-voice to read aloud instead. Sometimes my girlfriend reads me bed-time stories over skype.

2. I love mindless domestic tasks like cleaning and organizing and arranging and decorating and cooking, to a degree that seems odd to some people.

3. I love driving. I do not love the drivers in Virginia.

4. I have a pet hedgehog named Captain Mike Yates, who is an adorable little terror.

5. I take my tea with skim milk and fake sugar. Blackberry sage is my favourite, followed by Lady Grey.

I tend to feel strongly about things. I get the joking “tell us how you really feel” reply a lot, but it doesn’t bother me because that is, to my mind, the most fatuous criticism possible. Oh no, how dare I have a passionate opinion and express it openly, sorry for inconveniencing you! So I guess you could say that is a thing I feel strongly about - that people should be allowed to feel things as much as they feel them, whether it is a lot or not very much at all. I don’t think it’s something I feel MOST strongly about? That’s a trickier matter, indeed. There are overarching trends but it varies from day to day. Today I feel most strong that, as I said to a friend earlier, “Samuel Beckett is an annoying navel-gazing boring fuckwit and everything bad that people think of in regards to theatre and literature is basically embodied by his self-obsessed sorry ass”.

Devil: What’s your worst vice/weakness?

So hard to choose, I have an extensive collection. I can really be startlingly hedonistic in my own rather peculiar way. In terms of weaknesses… inertia and indecision, a certain indifference towards causes and noble efforts and all that sort of thing. Lack of impulse control.

Judgement: Do you see yourself as a forgiving person?

I try to be. When people deserve it, that is. Then again, I don’t feel like people really cross me enough for me to need to forgive them. Maybe I don’t have enough data collected to answer this particular question accurately.
